(And no, we're not talking about her Teen Choice Award for Most Disgusting Scene in 'There's Something About Mary.') Computer security giant McAfee has named Diaz the most dangerous celebrity on the Internet, due to the massive amount of malware associated with her name. According to McAfee, you have a one in ten chance of stumbling on adware and viruses when searching for "Cameron Diaz," no matter how tame your search query is.

Diaz edged out Jessica Biel for the top spot this year, followed (in order) by Julia Roberts, Biel herself, Gisele Bündchen and Brad Pitt. (Strangely, McAfee notes that searches for people like Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are relatively safe.) We had no idea that Diaz was such a global star that her name would garner so much interest for cyber-criminals. (Why didn't Lindsay Lohan make the list in that case?) Still, for all our digs at Diaz and this dubious honor from McAffe, we have to give her props for her brilliant, frizzy performance in 'Being John Malkovich': "Don't stand in the way of my actualization as a man!" Check out the full list after the break.
First it was Prince, and now John Mellencamp is picking a bone with the Internet. According to Reuters, during a recent speech at the Grammy Museum, Mellencamp said, "the Internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb."John Cougar went on to say that it had destroyed the music business, and has the movie business in its sights. While this sentiment would be called relevant in 1999, the real issue is comparing the way most of us communicate to one of the most destructive forces of all time. (Granted, for an industry known for fleecing its audience and screwing its artists, maybe the open-ended Internet is akin to the loss of life...) What Mellencamp laments is the degradation of music via MP3, saying of an iPod, "the warmth and quality of what the artist intended for us to hear (is) so vastly different."

Well, John (can we call you that?), the Internet does not equal MP3s, and plenty of artists are thriving, connecting and producing in the new world. The Web and the atomic bomb are certainly two of the most important and powerful inventions of the last century -- as both are scary, both are game-changers and both completely shook things up, retiring plenty of obsolete technology (and pop ballads) in the process. Call us overly sensitive, though, as we do spend our days blogging, which is apparently nearly as devastating as Hiroshima. And, according to one of Ryan's former flames, texting might be to blame.

Charmaine Blake, Ryan's ex-girlfriend, recently revealed to People that the surgeon was tweeting about his border collie just before his fatal crash. "He lived up in Malibu on a tiny street and he was texting while driving and he accidentally went over the cliff," says Blake, who is also a celebrity publicist. Blake went on to say that investigators have already told Ryan's family that the doctor's tweeting caused the accident, although the California Highway Patrol has yet to declare an official cause. Although CHP officer Steven Reid confirms that Ryan was indeed typing away on his phone, he insists that, at this point, the tweeting is just "one of the elements that we are investigating."
Continue reading Heidi Montag's Plastic Surgeon Was Texting Just Before Fatal Accident

Heidi Montag's Plastic Surgeon Was Texting Just Before Fatal Accident originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 09:50:00 EST.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guns N' Roses fans were duped into believing Axl Rose and the boys had canceled an upcoming European tour when somebody hacked into Rose's Twitter account. On Sunday, this message appeared on Rose's rarely used (but verified) Twitter account: "All upcoming Guns N' Roses dates are officially cancelled. Please contact your place of purchase for any refunds." Live Nation's Festival Republic division, which booked GNR's shows at the Reading and Leeds festivals, quickly refuted the hoax by saying in a statement that the Twitter account had been hacked. But the message has been retweeted more than 100 times, so we imagine there are some folks who still think GNR bailed on these dates. Honestly, we're just surprised that so many people still care enough about GNR -- since Axl now looks like the host of 'Tales From the Crypt'. Okay, so he's not exactly a violent mob boss, but the world has now learned a valuable lesson: don't cross Justin Bieber. While it's not quite breaking someone's legs, the floppy-haired, Segway-riding teen heartthrob decided to make one boy's life a living hell when he tweeted the kid's phone number to roughly 4.5 million followers.

Allegedly, Kevin Kristopik hacked the account of one of Bieber's close childhood friends. In response, the Biebs apparently took a page from M.I.A.'s play book and tweeted, "everyone call me 248-***-**** :) or text." Of course, the phone number was not his own but that of Kristopik, and Bieber's fans flooded Kristopik's phone with tens of thousands of texts and phone calls.
Continue reading Justin Bieber Sics Twitter Fans on Enemy by Posting His Number

Justin Bieber Sics Twitter Fans on Enemy by Posting His Number originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 12:45:00 EST.
The undisputed 'King of Late Night' is making a comeback -- this time, on the Internet. According to The New York Times, more than 3,500 hours of footage from Johnny Carson's tenure as host of 'The Tonight Show' has been preserved digitally and archived on the Web for fans to enjoy. It took about 2,000 people to complete this two-phase project, which mostly spans the years between 1973 and 1992 (as much of the pre-1973 footage was destroyed long ago). Phase one was the launch of johnnycarson.com, which features between 40 and 60 clips of Carson yukking it up with different celebrity guests. Phase two was launching the password-protected site licensing.johnnycarson.com, which is a more extensive archive of Carson's years on 'The Tonight Show,' largely intended for companies who are interested in licensing Carson's material. However, Carson Entertainment president Jeff Sotzing told the Times that he hopes to make more of this site's footage available to the public soon, so we'll keep our fingers crossed. Unfortunately, videos from the main site aren't embeddable, which will severely limit the ability of any of these clips to go viral.

Let's just hope nobody ever archives Jay Leno's years on 'The Tonight Show' on the web. It's bad enough hearing him recycle the same jokes every night without knowing he's immortalized on the Internet, too. If you didn't get into your college of choice, don't worry. Bill Gates thinks that where you get your college soon won't matter. According to Tech Crunch, Gates said last week at the Techonomy 2010 conference that, over the next five years, the Internet will offer a better education than the collegiate model. "Five years from now on the Web, for free, you'll be able to find the best lectures in the world," he said. Gates emphasized the high cost of the "place-based" college model (i.e. sweating it through Biology 101 in moldy basement labs), and argued that technology can radically cut the high costs of a traditional college education -- to as low as $2,000. These lower costs could make it easier for anyone to get an education.

Don't get too excited about the death of the real world classroom, though. Gates claims the current K-12 educational model is still essential for students, specifically lauding immersive charter schools, as well as hybrid approaches that combine technology learning with real world discussion. At the college level, though, Gates says, "the self-motivated learner will be on the Web." Now, the woman behind the accusations has revealed her identity to the world, and has offered her condolences to her former boss.

Jodie Fisher, a 50-year-old former actress and reality TV star, knew Hurd while working as a marketing consultant for HP. From 2007 to 2009, she regularly made the rounds at HP events that she'd helped to organize, often introducing the CEO to clients, and keeping him company. Somewhere along the line, though, their relationship allegedly took a turn for the inappropriate, leading Fisher to file a sexual harassment lawsuit against the 53-year-old executive.
Continue reading Jodie Fisher 'Saddened' Over HP CEO Mark Hurd's Resignation

Jodie Fisher 'Saddened' Over HP CEO Mark Hurd's Resignation originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 09:50:00 EST. Now, she is squashing any hopes that we'll ever be able to download recordings by the Fab Four in Apple's store. According to a Reuters report on Yahoo! When recent Twitter convert Kanye West chose to follow the account of a kid named Steven Holmes, everyone struggled to comprehend why Mr. West would want to follow a relatively anonymous student -- and no one else. Surely this kid must be the world's most rabid Kanye fan, right? Or perhaps he's another struggling musician who's been chomping at the bit for his one shot at fame? Well, not exactly.

"The funny thing is I like his music but I'm not his biggest fan," the media student tells his local Coventry Telegraph newspaper. "Before this weekend I thought it would be cool to have a celebrity following me on Twitter but now I think it's really not worth it." Ever since being anointed as Kanye's "Chosen One," Holmes has accumulated upwards of 3,000 followers, and has been barraged with messages from aspiring artists, filmmakers and musicians, "as if I have some sort of influence over Kanye West." He's also received a slew of interview requests from major media outlets like the BBC, New York Magazine and CNN. And he's refused every single one. "I didn't want to talk to any of them," Holmes says. "Fame has never appealed to me. It's vacuous."
A new Facebook-based start-up called Cameo Stars is hoping to turn itself into the next viral craze by having celebrities wish you a happy birthday. Cameo Stars features A-list football players Reggie Bush, Tony Romo and Drew Brees -- along with the perpetually irrelevant Carmen Electra -- shot on green screen and expressing generic platitudes for you to post on your friends' Facebook pages.

Some of the videos are free -- like the one featuring Tony Romo psyching you out with a feigned pass -- while the birthday greetings will run you 30 Facebook credits, or $3. It's unclear whether or not the videos can be made truly personal -- the paid videos we previewed were not much more than Carmen Electra in full sexpot mode popping through the top of a CGI cake, squealing, "Happy birthday, baby!" According to the New York Times, the company "promises that more movie and television personalities are on the way."
Continue reading Carmen Electra Will Wish You Happy Birthday on Facebook... According to MTV, Jackson estate lawyers recently forced gaming company PopCap to change a character in one of its iPhone apps, 'Plants vs. Zombies,' because said character bore a striking resemblance to the King of Pop. From now on, the Dancing Zombie character will no longer be clad in a Thriller-esque red leather jacket, short pants and white socks. Instead, the character will become disco-themed.

"The Estate of Michael Jackson objected to our use of the 'dancing zombie' in 'Plants vs. Zombies' based on its view that the zombie too closely resembled Michael Jackson," a PopCap Games rep told MTV. "After receiving this objection, PopCap made a business decision to retire the original 'dancing zombie' and replace it with a different 'dancing zombie' character for future builds of 'Plants vs. Zombies' on all platforms. The phase-out and replacement process is underway."
Continue reading Michael Jackson Forces 'Plants Vs. Ivy Bean, from Bradford, England, definitely wasn't your average Twitterer. She had a staggering 57,000 people following her IvyBean104 handle, and, thanks to her viral popularity, managed to work her way into meetings with British politicians and celebrities, alike. Oh, and at 104-years young, she was the world's oldest microblogger.

Late Tuesday, though, Bean passed away at the care facility where she stayed, and her death was announced, appropriately enough, on Twitter. As CNN reports, Bean fell ill two weeks ago, forcing care facility manager Pat Wright to take over her tweeting duties. On Wednesday, Wright tweeted, "Ivy passed away at 12.08 this morning," and quickly followed that up by writing, "I'm sorry it took me so long to tell you but it was a very difficult thing to do."
Continue reading Ivy Bean, Twitter's Oldest User, Dies at 104

Ivy Bean, Twitter's Oldest User, Dies at 104 originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 10:05:00 EST. In case you haven't already brightened your days with videos of the boy (and his haircut) walking face-first into more than one glass door, it seemed for a while that the Biebs was unable to master the simple act of perambulation. So, naturally, he turned to the coolest and most enviable set of mechanical legs this side of Gob Bluth: the Segway.

We suggest turning down your volume before watching the video after the break. Bieber emerges, scooting along the back lot of a concert arena in Glendale, Arizona, and is suddenly Bieb-sieged [Ed. Note: Heyooo!] by an exponentially growing piranha-swarm of screaming young girls. Luckily for 'Baby' fans, and for his growing base of lesbian emulators, he escapes unscathed. A close call for the Biebs, to be sure: we can only imagine that, had they caught him by his signature tresses, he would've been torn limb from limb like the last earthly survivor among a horde of the undead. It can be argued that the true measure of celebrity is whether or not a person has made a cameo on 'The Simpsons.' After all, just look at a few of the names who've appeared on the show during its 21-year-run on Fox.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has more than 500 million "friends," a movie based on his life coming out this fall and, according to New York Magazine, a featured role in an episode of 'The Simpsons' that will air in October. In the episode, titled 'Loan-a-Lisa,' Lisa Simpson and school bully Nelson Muntz become young entrepreneurs when they start a bike company together. The duo attends a convention to meet investors, and bump into none other than The Zuck, who reminds them that many young billionaires (cough, cough) dropped out of school. Don't expect the bookish Lisa to follow his advice, although we bet Nelson will be all for it. While 'The Simpsons' ain't the comedy powerhouse it once was, the show is still good for a laugh or two each week, especially when a topic -- like Zuckerberg's social networking empire -- is so ripe for the picking. The former Illinois governor has amazed us with his headline grabbing corruptibility and shameless ploys for attention. But while we can kiss his priceless appearances on reality TV shows goodbye and as there will be no Tweeting from the courtroom, at least we can still revel in some of his more "colorful" golden quotes. The Off The Clock blog at the paper has them all up for quick and easy preview and download. Our favorite of the bunch? "Only 13-percent of you all out there think I'm doing a good job. Whoopi Goldberg, we've lost faith in you. After defending Mel Gibson's racist tirades this week, she finally went too far with her reaction to iPhone 4's reception problems. (If you're interested, Jezebel compiled a disturbing list of things that Whoopi's tried to justify, including Michael Vick's predilection for dog-fighting and people who think the Moon landing was faked.) But the comedy empress explained this week on 'The View' that when she finally got so exasperated with her iPhone's dropped calls, she threw it out of her car and "murdered it."

We're not about to defend the iPhone 4, whose reception problems Apple will be addressing in a press event in just a few hours. But it must be oh-so-nice to be a celebrity and have the financial wherewithal to destroy a $200 piece of electronics on a reactionary whim, instead of doing what Apple has offered and returning the phone for a full refund. Look, Whoopi -- we've been a longtime fans of yours, and even found your bizarre campaign about sneezing and peeing kind of endearing. But defending an unapologetic racist and burning your money in the same week has left us a little hurt. The disheartening video is after the break. Let's say you've been betrayed. Someone you've dedicated the last several years of your life to just up and walks away from you. And worse still, makes sure to create a self-serving, over-dramatic spectacle as he does so. When you decide it's time to vent your frustrations, and address not only the person who stabbed you in the back but the people who were collateral damage in breakup, what font speaks both of rage, the severity of your hurt and the complexity of your emotions? If you said Comic Sans, you're probably Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert.

In one of the most mind-boggling decisions we've ever encountered, Gilbert posted an open letter to Cavaliers fans tearing LeBron James apart for his abandonment of the Ohio team in the most despised font to ever grace the annals of typographic history. It's a shame, too, because the understandable anger and seemingly sincere (if somewhat spiteful) promise to win an NBA championship are drowned in the font of hideous chain letters. On the plus side, the rant did garner plenty of attention on Twitter because of its typographical faux pas. Maybe Gilbert knew it would. Maybe he's smarter than we realize, and Comic Sans was all part of the plan. We never thought we'd say it, but Kenny G is right, dammit. Of course, when being right requires nothing more than saying, "The Internet isn't dead," it's only worth so much. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, the smooth-jazz sax operator took his defiant stand in response to Prince's recent proclamation of the Web's demise. (And we thought Bono had the market cornered in pretending that obvious statements are radical. "AIDS is bad, mates.") Still, as is the case with that U2 blowhard, if you think exhibiting some degree of sense will get Kenny G off the hook for this, you're more mistaken than the Purple One could ever be. His thriller novels, often about a psychologist named Alex Cross, are basic bestseller tripe in the vein of Dan Brown. Patterson is far more prolific than most of his contemporaries, though, having penned 65 novels in his 33-year career. That body of work has put him in a position to be one of the foremost forces behind the e-book revolution.

Patterson's publishing company, The Hachette Book Group, claims that his novels have now moved 1.14 million copies in electronic form, making him the first author to sell over 1 million e-copies of his books. There are no third-party monitors of e-book sales, so Hachette relied on its own numbers and compared them with the sales of other prominent authors. Patterson will likely soon be followed across the million copy line by other bestselling authors, but we won't lie; we're shocked that he wasn't beaten to the punch by more geek-friendly authors like Stephen King or Douglas Adams.
