Those well-worn holiday tunes are filling the radio waves and stores again, even though Thanksgiving isn't even here yet. Get a jump on your holiday shopping (and retaining your sanity) with our handy Holiday Gift Guide for 2009. We've got you covered whether you're looking for an affordable gift for the creative in your family or have an unlimited budget for the gadget head in your close group of friends.

We know the frustration of finding the perfect gift, so we built this year's guide around types of people and several price ranges (ranging from Under $50 to unlimited budget). Select the type of person you're looking for, click an appropriate price, and the guide will reveal everything that fits.

Pour yourself some eggnog, boot up the guide and your favorite online retailer, and knock out your gift-giving in no time!
Switched's Holiday Gift Guide 2009 originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 17:01:00 EST.
There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

Tillman the Skateboarding Dog is a skating celeb, so it makes sense that he (or one of his bulldog buds) gets to try out the new Tony Hawk game, which comes with a digi-skateboard. Trust us, it's as cute as it sounds. [From: Urlesque]

Nothing goes as well with Japanese minimalism than Lego, which is why this block set from Muji is amazingly cool. [From: High Snobiety]

The debate is a bit more than seeing an ex pop up constantly on Facebook. Professor Viktor Mayer-Schonberger talks about how new media makes it difficult to forget, which is an important part of the human experience, (though one commenter points out the other side of the spectrum). [From: Reuters]

Wired's list of '10 Geeky Things To Be Thankful For" really are geeky (terabytes? really?), but we admit, we are glad there is good sci-fi on TV, too. [From: Wired.com]

Of all the wondrous things about Motorola's Droid, there's been one major flaw: the camera's lousy focus. Now, all of a sudden, it can mysteriously find its targets perfectly. Apple Wins Comprehensively Against Psystar
The battle between tech behemoth Apple and Mac clone maker Psystar seems to have come to a very abrupt and crashing halt. Over the weekend, a California court ruled that the Hackintosh maker had to cease operations immediately.

Black Friday Deals Roundup
We're still over a week away from the biggest shopping day of the year, but all the major deals have been revealed -- and are a little, well, underwhelming. See for yourself.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Apple Beats Poseur Psystar, Black Friday Deals

The Daily Engadget: Apple Beats Poseur Psystar, Black Friday Deals originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 09:15:00 EST. Last week, we took our cameras to the streets and inadvertently stumped roughly half the people when we asked, "What is Flickr?" This time, we decided to try our luck by inquiring about Twitter, and, for the most part, everyone had an inkling as to the micro-blogging powerhouse's raison d'être.

Since people are now apparently tweeting 27 million times a day, this should come as no surprise. Not only do we chronicle our outrage over a contentious election via tweets, the Twiteratti have even taken to academic discourse. A zeitgeist has been ignited by 140-character streams of culture.

So what answer most aptly captured the Twitter Experience? "Like, if someone's going to the bathroom, you can know that...I guess that's when they tweet." Precisely.

Twitter and Facebook Integration Hits Xbox Live Next Week

It was announced over the summer and has been teased plenty since, but Microsoft is finally releasing the next big update to the Xbox 360 next week, adding in social network integration and also some 1080p streaming video.

Google Chrome OS Launching Next Week?

Google's Chrome OS has been rumored and supposedly photographed, and now out of the blue it's set to launch in just a week. MacBook Pro Battery Explodes
Oh, boy. Another MacBook Pro battery, another explosion. This one started making an "odd noise," then "jumped up" and turned off. Bad things for a laptop to do.
SmartPill Checks You on the Inside
How well do you know your intestinal system? Not as well as you would if you were to ever swallow this SmartPill, which checks temperature and pH, and measures the time from intake to, erm, output.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: MacBook Pro Explodes, SmartPill Gauges Your Insides

The Daily Engadget: MacBook Pro Explodes, SmartPill Gauges Your Insides originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 10:20:00 EST. Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

Pizza Hut's annoying, spamming Facebook app earned the company some criticism last year, but the response to its three-month-old iPhone app has been somewhat different. So far, the mobile ordering system has reportedly brought in over $1 million in revenue. [From: Textually]

Since the onset of the recession, many folks have considered the video game marketplace to be immune from the economic downturn. EA, one of the industry's biggest and most enduring names, has suffered significant losses over the last year, though, and is being forced to completely shutter some facilities. The closings will unfortunately result in the termination of 1,500 employees by April of next year. [From: TUAW]

Although the holidays are supposed to be a time of cheer and goodwill, the economy is instead creating turmoil, hardship, and worry. After firing 600 employees last December (Seriously? Are you just trying to avoid giving out holiday bonuses?), Adobe is prepared to lay off another 680 this year -- approximately nine-percent of the company's workforce. Where's Cousin Eddie when you need him?
Thankfully, some companies know how to act appropriately during the season of giving. Google is now offering significant discounts on additional storage for GMail and Picasa Web users, including a $5 deal for 20 additional gigabytes. [From: Download Squad]

A recent Razorfish consumer survey revealed that 25-percent of Twitter users follow corporate brands, while 40-percent of Facebook and MySpace members have done so. The study also determined that social networkers are a thrifty bunch; approximately 40-percent of each group follow the companies for the sake of exclusive deals and discounts. [From: Read Write Web]

Mac OS X 10.6.2 is officially available, and the update reportedly provides numerous fixes and corrections. It will not, however, run on consoles with ATOM CPUs. [From: Download Squad]

Photo tagging provides a much needed security blanket for Facebook members -- particularly those who need alerts so potentially incriminating tagged photos from those Delta house days don't appear on any in-laws' pages. Beginning today, Face.com will apparently be offering a new, free app that uses facial recognition software to identify likenesses, even on photos that have not been tagged. That was just a huge sigh of relief you heard. The cell phone has been draining the world's sperm supply for more than 35 years already. And yet, as ubiquitous as mobiles are today, so too are the dolts who still haven't grasped how to use one responsibly. For anyone who's ever gabbed at dinner, texted on the toilet, ruined a movie, or grossed out an elevator (just to name a few mobile no-nos), Switched presents the following guide of cell phone Dos and Don'ts. By all means, do us (and yourself) a favor and forward it on to your fondest offenders.

Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

Conrad Hilton revolutionized the hotel business in the early 20th century, and his namesake chain is aiming to do the same in the '00s with promises of technological evolution. Yesterday, Hilton Worldwide announced the release of iPhone and iPod touch apps that will enable guests to remotely check in, choose beds, and order food.
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry apparently first learned of lead singer Steven Tyler's plans to go solo by reading it on the Web, so he has angrily responded and spread the news via Twitter. (We're pretty sure, anyway. Let's keep in mind that the account is not verified). It's a shame to watch a legendary band squabble after so many years. Maybe, to prevent such turmoil and pain, they should have handled this by fax -- about 15 years ago. [From: The Daily Beast]

The hilarious, humbling, and vulgar Twitter sensation 'Sh*t My Dad Says' has scored a TV gig with CBS, joining 'Texts From Last Night' and 'Awkward Family Photos' in the ranks of sites and Twitter pages that are hitting the big time. But, don't expect a screen or book version of 'People of Walmart,' because someone has already made it. It's called 'Deliverance.'
Engaged in a battle with Apple to corner the market on everything, Google has reportedly purchased Gizmo5, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. The move will put the "world's biggest brand" in direct competition with the world's largest international call provider, Skype, which also recently considered purchasing Gizmo5.
Coca-Cola has received a formal warning from the Australian Communications and Media Authority for spamming mobile phones with 100,000 unsolicited text messages. Sadly, the company won't have to pay a fine for the annoying stunt, which was probably just the latest salvo in the tumultuous and devastating war between Coke Classic and Coke Zero.
Google Gifts Wi-Fi For Christmas Travelers
There are few public spaces in this great land more depressing, irritating, and stressful than the airport. The holidays only make those terminals more terminal, with overbooked flights and delays due to wintry weather. Thankfully, Google is giving us all a big, fat Christmas gift: free Wi-Fi in many of the nation's major airports.

T-Mobile Set to Replace myFaves With Free Calling
Thanks to its advertising campaigns, even those of us without T-Mobile are aware of the carrier's myFaves service. The cell bigwig has bid farewell to that friendly function, though, announcing the new Even More plan, which will offer its subscribers unlimited voice minutes. Sounds good to us, as we each have more than five friends. (Like, at least, seven.)
Question: I'm finally ready to move to Mac, especially with Apple's latest iMacs. I really like the design and simplicity. But which one should I get? I was thinking I should get the base model for $1199, but the big 27-incher is pretty tempting, too, even though it's another $500. Or should I spend the extra money and get the upgraded versions of the iMac? So confusing -- I thought Apple was easy! I'll be using it for a little bit of everything, but my high-end needs will include a little video editing, music writing, and graphic design with Photoshop.

Answer: Apple certainly likes to tout its simplicity and plug-and-play usability, but try telling that to someone switching to Mac for the first time. On the surface, it looks as though Apple has two new iMacs out: the 21.5-inch and 27-inch. Simple. Done. Right?

Not so much. Let's take a quick trip to Apple shopping land (otherwise known as store.apple.com).
Continue reading What's the Best iMac for Basic Creative Tasks?

What's the Best iMac for Basic Creative Tasks? originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 16:10:00 EST. Highlights from the morning's other big tech headlines....

Israel is currently developing a missile alert system that would identify the destinations of incoming rockets and notify residents in the impact zones via cell phone. University campuses in the States already use such services for emergency situations, but an organized system of public warnings definitely warrants investigation.
Just five years ago, Mozilla launched Firefox 1.0, and the fan-friendly company is urging folks to 'Light the World' and celebrate. The browser may not have eclipsed Internet Explorer in sheer numbers yet, but with one billion downloads already, it might not take another five years.
While overall numbers aren't being broadcasted, Barnes & Noble says demand for its soon-to-be-released Nook e-reader is so high that the company is being forced to push back shipping dates. Of course, Apple will probably release its rumored Tablet right after the holidays -- just to make all those other freshly purchased e-readers obsolete.
'60 Minutes' has been airing hard-hitting investigative pieces for over 40 years, but the cast, which looks more and more like an AARP gathering, hasn't exactly developed a reputation for tech acumen. Citing anonymous sources, last night's episode included a segment that claimed that massive power outages in Brazil during 2005 and 2007 were the result of orchestrated cyber attacks. The Brazilian government, the Brazilian power company, and the Brazilian homeland security office all deny the allegations.
Even though it has been dubbed the "world's biggest brand," Google sites still lag behind Microsoft sites in terms of usage. A global comScore study has revealed that people spent 3.9 billion hours on Microsoft sites during September -- primarily Live Messenger -- compared to the 2.5 billion on Google sites and 1.2 billion on YouTube. Facebook was, of course, the fastest riser, as it experienced an impressive 200-percent increase.
Facebook membership hit the 300 million mark earlier this fall, and the interest and infatuation continue to climb. The site now claims that it's attracting 500,000 new users every day. Nokia Recalling 14 Million Defective Chargers
It was just a few weeks ago that Sony wowed us with a recall of 69,000 chargers. Not to be outdone, Nokia has now gone several orders of magnitude better, recalling 14 million chargers due to potential electric shock.
First Worm Hits iPhone
Don't let the above words frighten you; if you're rolling with a standard iPhone, and haven't tried to do any hacking on it, you're in the clear. But, if you've jailbroken your beloved gadget, you'd better watch out for this Rick Astley-themed virus.
Continue reading The Daily Engadget: Nokia Recalls 14M Chargers, First iPhone Worm

The Daily Engadget: Nokia Recalls 14M Chargers, First iPhone Worm originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 09:30:00 EST. Like pet-of-the-week Pinky the Cat, even the most adorable and innocent of critters can turn into vicious terrors when hiding behind the anonymous wall of technology. Once peaceful people can suddenly turn violent when sheltered by the Net, a cell phone, or even a large, exo-suit cargo loader. Imagine, if you will, happy-go-lucky Mickey Mouse suddenly taking a turn for the rogue thanks to a new video game. Fancy a mild-mannered, 14-year-old boy leading a Facebook revolution, or a regular ol' baby monitor suddenly going all Big Brother on its users. The seemingly harmless are transformed into corrupt, avian balls of fury, hurling baked goods into multi-million-dollar, potentially world-disrupting equipment. The danger is clear. A sheep in tech-infested, super-soluble, implanted silicone clothing is just as terrifying as the wolf, itself. Some other things to be wary of:

Overreacting in its most dangerous form: a misfired text leads to a deadly shooting.

In New York, we have to put up with annoying subway "improvements" in our commute, but that's so we don't have to deal with outdated computers crippling the area and sending traffic into chaos.

Sitting at a cafe, enjoying your coffee, minding your own un-phished existence? That public Wi-Fi might not be as secure as you think.

Since a 12-year-old has no real concept of posting bail, or using a license as a bond, when he does something bad, it's the video games he misses the most.

There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

If you've got our luck, you'll strike out for a holiday shopping extravaganza, get to the mall, and then realize you forgot to bring the coupons from the weekend paper. Fear not, good shoppers. Fortunately, there's a Black Friday app for your iPhone. [From: geeksugar]

Design changes at Facebook usually rile up users, who, without fail, protest by creating groups on the site. Fortunately, some of those protesters are actually productive, creating solutions like 'Facebook Facelift,' a project re-imagining the ubiquitous social networking site's interface. [From: Likecool.com]

Our friends over at Asylum rounded up the best video game trailers of all time. Some of our favorites. [From: Asylum]

When compared to the stock velvet paintings of Hendrix and Pink Floyd that fill college dorms nationwide, these velvet images of sci-fi icons are modern-day masterpieces. We'll admit that, as tech journalists, we live in a bit of a self-imposed bubble when it comes to Internet goings-on. ("What do you mean, 'You've never heard of a meme?' ") So we decided to take our cameras to the streets of New York and descend upon the less compulsively-geeky masses to ask, "What is Flickr?"

Though the image-sharing behemoth Flickr -- now millions of users strong -- celebrated its 4 billionth photo upload last month, we apparently confused a fair-sized cross-section of people walking through Times Square. But all was not lost: despite the fact that some couldn't tell us "what the Flickr is," we mercifully found some of our own ilk, from teens to more mature passerbys, to legitimize our inherently techy career focus. (Mom, Dad, we're doing powerful important work, here.)
There's no denying the runaway success of Apple's App Store: to date, iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded some 2 billion applications from its ever-expanding library of 100,000. But there's also no escaping the rumblings of discontent from many consumers and developers who feel that Apple is unfairly acting as judge, jury, and executioner by censoring apps and exiling them from the App Store.

Much of the consternation stems from the fact that Apple has never published hard and fast guidelines for what determines whether an app will be allowed through Apple's gatekeepers. To make matters worse for frustrated developers, Apple frequently contradicts itself in its judgments. So, say, while porn stars are free to peddle T and A to consenting adults, e-book packages that include the "Kama Sutra" are apparently too risqué for Apple. In the hopes of discovering a method to this maddening process, we've looked at nine high-profile iPhone apps that were found guilty of transgressing Apple's (unwritten) approval terms, and weigh in on the fairness of Apple's judgment and the likelihood an app will have it overturned on appeal in the future.
Continue reading 9 Banned Apps You'll Never See on the iPhone

9 Banned Apps You'll Never See on the iPhone originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 12:45:00 EST.
