While most of us were relaxing and getting our BBQ on this weekend, a story was breaking that saw rogue developers hacking iTunes accounts and buying their own apps to both steal your cash and improve their own App Store rankings. In particular, Asian developer Thuat Nguyen has hijacked accounts across the globe and pushed 40 apps into the top 50 of the books category and racked up over $1,000 in ...

What began as an innocent viral joke may end up costing one Best Buy worker his part-time job. Brian Maupin, of Missouri, recently posted two videos making fun of iPhone and Evo acolytes, respectively. Although neither video made explicit reference to his employer, managers at the Independence, MO Best Buy decided to suspend him from his duties after Maupin refused their polite suggestion that he ...

At first glance this seems like a terrible idea: putting an iPad front and center in an airplane cockpit. You wouldn't put one at the fingertips of a driver, so it would make sense to keep the app-running, Web-browsing device out of view when careening several thousand feet above ground. But, surprise, that's one of the key features of the Zlin iCub, a new recreational aircraft being shown off at ...

Mobile banking apps are a dime a dozen, but a recent update to JPMorgan Chase's free iPhone app really makes it stand out from the rest. Now, customers can deposit checks to their account via iPhone snapshots. It's as simple as logging into your account on the Chase Mobile iPhone app and snapping a photo of both the front and back of the check. Soon after, it will land in your account without the ...

[Disclaimer: The author of this article has the same name as the one-eyed, purple-haired alien in 'Futurama,' and, therefore, everything the show does is sacred to her.]
The best thing about pre-cancellation 'Futurama' was that it was delightfully dated, with jokes about pop-up ads, AOL and pre-iPod Apple -- all of which were especially funny because the show takes place in the future. ...

After being widely lampooned for blaming its iPhone 4's reception problems on how users hold it, Apple has finally come out with a more legitimate-sounding, but equally head-scratching response to the issue. In a press release, the company said, "Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong." As it ...

Verizon iPhone, blah, blah, blah. We've heard before that Apple is hard at work on a CDMA version of the iPhone that will land on Verizon, and thereby eliminate the need for devoted Jobsians to suffer at the hands of AT&T's lackluster (but admittedly improving) service. Someone "familiar with the plans" told Bloomberg to expect the Apple handset to arrive on Big Red this January.

Every version of the iPhone has its idiosyncrasies, but the most recent incarnation tops them all. "You're holding it wrong" has essentially been Cupertino's answer to those customers experiencing lost reception and dropped calls. The only consistent workaround, it seems, is to use an iPhone case, which prevents you from touching the phone in all the wrong places, and thus from losing reception. ...

Ridiculously long lines of surly shoppers greeted the iPhone 4's official arrival last week. For those smelly campers who returned home to dismayed and agitated significant others (as long as it wasn't empty handed), a brand new app may help inspire the jilted lovers to forget their temporarily subordinate status to a gadget.
Tiffany and Co. now offers the 'Ring Finder' app, which guides ...

Not even a week after slashing its e-reader's price, Amazon has also revamped its Kindle application for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch with shiny new upgrades. According to Engadget, the Kindle app now features embedded audio and video on select titles. The first e-books making use of this feature are Rick Steves's "London," which features a walking tour of the town narrated by Steves, and ...

The song is a little 1999 (the guys having missed the Nu-Metal train by about ten years), but the video for The Anix's 'Enemy Eyes' is all 2010. Just a few minutes after one of the band's members got home with his iPhone 4, the group decided to see just what the built-in 720p camcorder could do. The results are quite impressive. Sure, a MacBook Pro was needed to add some effects and color ...

Most Apple fanatics who waited in line overnight to get their hands on the iPhone 4 wouldn't part with their shiny new handsets easily. But Brittany Hightower of Little Rock, Arkansas simply couldn't say no to Stacy Andrews, an offensive guard for the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL star stopped the Walmart shopper, who was on her way out the door with what had been the last iPhone in the store, and ...

Apple's iPhone 4 launch has been beset by a growing line of failures, which has only been emphasized by the company's patronizing response to the "Antenna Attenuation" controversy. (Seriously, how many casual consumers know what "attenuation" means?) Following the company's pre-order collapse, iPhone-purchasing issues reached a release-day nadir with low inventories, unavailable gadgets, and ...

Having trouble finding a signal with your new iPhone 4? Apple says it's probably your own fault.
As it turns out, if you hold the phone in a way that blocks the iPhone's bottom left-hand corner, you might experience technical difficulties. Responding by e-mail to a frustrated iPhone 4 user and Engadget reader, Steve Jobs reportedly said, "Just avoid holding it that way."

The Obama '08 campaign helped to pioneer the use of mobile applications in political campaigns. Now, the remnants of that grassroots group, Organizing for America (OFA), is releasing a new iPhone and iPad app that will connect voters with Democratic representatives and candidates -- just in time for the fall elections. The official OFA app has all the features you'd expect from a political ...
