Facebook and 'South Park' Blamed for Anti-Red-Head Assault
Police in Calabasas, California are investigating the assault of a 12-year-old boy that, they believe, may have been inspired by a Facebook post declaring this past Friday, November 20th "Kick a Ginger Day." "Kick a Ginger Day" began in 2008, borne out of a 'South Park' episode that satirically featured pale, redheaded, freckled children, or "gingers," as being singled out for abuse.

While the first, clearly tongue-in-cheek "Kick a Ginger Day" drew some criticism, it went largely unnoticed, due to a lack of any serious violence. This year's "celebration" was unfortunately not so uneventful, as a student at A.E. Wright Middle School found himself on the receiving end of punches and kicks from as many as 14 classmates, according to the Associated Press.

A reader writes: I need a good TV for my living room specifically, and I've decided that LCD is the way to go. I definitely want good video quality and I'd like to keep it under a grand if I can. Please... just tell me what to get!

What up, reader? While the screen-size arms race is destined to continue forever (We fully expect to see a 120-incher any day now.), it turns out that the sweet spot for a typical living room is 40 or 42 inches. A TV around that size is big enough to let you lose yourself in a movie, but won't squat in the corner like an electronic elephant once you turn it off. With that in mind, we're pretty hot for Samsung's LN40B550 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV ($950 list, but lower at many places).

If you're planning a trip to South Korea, it might be a good idea to pack a comfortable pair of shoes. Why? Because you'll want to avoid the country's taxis. According to BBC News, a South Korean judge ruled that it's legal for taxi drivers to continue having televisions mounted on the dashboards of their cabs. This news comes despite police reports that cab drivers who were watching TV caused 200 accidents last year, claiming the lives of three people and injuring 351 in the process.

The ruling came as a result of one Seoul driver's challenge of a $507 fine he'd been given for watching TV while driving. Seoul is notorious for its congested streets -- the reason cab drivers installed the screens in the first place. When the government first launched a broadcasting system that beamed to mobile screens in 2005, TV-watching cabbies turned into a phenomenon.

DVR Viewers Sitting Through Commercials, Saving Shows
It was once thought that DVRs would destroy television. The theory was that people would stop watching live TV, and, of course, skip all the commercials -- the primary revenue stream for TV networks. But, oddly, as DVRs become more commonplace, fewer DVR viewers are fast-forwarding through advertisements.

According to Nielsen, the number of homes in the U.S. with DVRs has jumped from 28-percent last year, to 33-percent as 2009 winds to a close. The real shock, though, is that 46-percent of viewers between 18 and 49 years old (the most important advertising block) are actually sitting through the recorded advertisements. This is contrary to research from Oliver Wyman published last summer, which found that 85-percent of DVR owners were skipping at least three-quarters of commercials.

Although spring is still months away, it's never too early to get a head start on cleaning out some junk. If you're like us, you could probably fill a closet with old gadgets. It might be tempting to simply toss them in the trash, but that's not your only option. Why not recycle them? It's a lot easier than you think, if you know where to look. Doing the hard part for us, Endadget has put together a comprehensive list of programs that recycle anything from outdated cell phones to enormous projection-screen televisions.

Many companies -- like the Apple Recycling Program and Sony's Take Back Recycling Program -- are making a push toward "going green." If you can't find a manufacturer's program, some stores, like Best Buy, have in-house recycling services. Of course, the Environmental Protection Agency's Plug-In to eCycling Program also does a nice job rounding up recycling resources.

We can't believe it took a scientific study to discover this, but apparently, you're more likely to lose weight if you own more pieces of exercise equipment than televisions. Ever heard of common sense, people? According to a transcript of Scientific American's 60-Second Science podcast, a study that appeared in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found people who lost 10-percent of their body weight and kept if off for at least five years owned fewer TVs and more exercise equipment than their heftier counterparts.

Look, if you need a study to open your eyes to this connection, you have bigger problems than being overweight. We love to kick back in front of the TV as much as the next guy, but we also know that doing so too often can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. A little restraint (and, unfortunately, a little exercise, too) goes a long way when it comes to living healthy. If restraint isn't your strong point, there is technology out there that will help instead of hinder weight loss. Oh yeah, putting down the remote control every once in a while isn't a bad idea, either. [From: Scientific American]

Back in the '90s, Chris Farley and David Spade ruled the comedy landscape. But when Farley tragically overdosed, it was clear that Spade was just riding the big guy's coattails. In light of a recently debuted DirecTV commercial (video after the break), it appears that Spade doesn't intend to stop, either.

If you've turned on the television lately, you've probably seen the satellite provider's advertising spot that places an older Spade into the classic "fat guy in a little coat" scene from 'Tommy Boy.' Instead of making us laugh, the commercial makes our stomachs turn. While Farley does his bit (Trust us, it's still funny), Spade laments being stuck in a hotel with his buddy and basic cable when he could be at home watching DirecTV. Frankly, it's just unsettling to watch. What makes it worse is that this isn't the first time the company has used a dead star in a commercial.
